OmniVision has announced its latest OV50M40 image sensor with a resolution of 50 megapixels, designed for use in main, ultra-wide-angle and telephoto lenses, as well as front-facing smartphone cameras.
The sensor with a pixel size of 0.61 microns has an optical format of 1/2.88 inches, offers 4-element binning (shooting at a resolution of 12.5 megapixels by “gluing” neighboring pixels) and the Always On function for motion detection and ultra-low power consumption.
The OmniVision OV50M40 supports HDR technology with step-by-step HDR and HDR with dual analog exposure gain control (DAG), phase-detection autofocus (PDAF) for binning and full resolution modes. High-quality 2x and 3x zoom is also available.

The OV50M40 sensor is based on OmniVision’s proprietary PureCel Plus-S technology, with support for full-resolution images of 50 MP at 12 frames per second and 12.5 MP at 60 frames per second. It is also capable of shooting 4K video at 60 frames per second and 1080p video at 120 frames per second.
The new OmniVision OV50M40 will be available to the company’s partners in the third quarter of 2024, with mass production planned for the fourth quarter.
