Until now, Sony has been the only company producing 1″ image sensors for smartphone cameras, but recently it was supplanted in this market by the Chinese brand OmniVision, which released the OmniVision OV50X50 sensor.
The novelty boasts a resolution of 50.3 megapixels (8192 x 6144 pixels) with a pixel size of 1.6 microns, support for 10/12/14 RGB RAW, the ability to shoot videos up to 8K and record HDR videos.
According to the manufacturer, the OmniVision OV50X50 has the highest dynamic range among similar solutions, provided by the proprietary TheiaCel technology, which extends the HDR exposure to 110 dB, the highest range in smartphone cameras.

In addition, the new OmniVision sensor offers 100% coverage of the four-phase autofocus (QPD) sensor.
The OmniVision OV50X50 will be launched in mass production in the third quarter of 2025 and, according to rumors, we will be able to see it in smartphones of the upcoming flagship Xiaomi 16 line.
