For about ten years, Sony has been supplying image sensors to Apple, which equips the cameras of its iPhones with them, but, apparently, everything will change soon – it is reported that Samsung is developing an advanced and unusual sensor for the American manufacturer.
To be more precise, last summer, well-known industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo shared data that Samsung would release at least one of the image sensors for the iPhone 18 in 2026.
According to the source, we are talking about a 1/2.6-inch 48-megapixel sensor for the “shirika”. Moreover, it is claimed that Samsung has created a special department dedicated to working with Apple.
Now, this information has been confirmed by a network informant with the nickname Jukanlosreve, specializing in leaks related to Samsung. According to him, the Korean company is developing a three-layer sensor in the PD-TR-Logic format.
This image sensor will be more advanced than the current Sony Exmor RS sensor, so it is highly likely to end up in the main camera of the future iPhone.
At the same time, it is clarified that a multi-layer solution, when the signal processing unit is located directly on the back of the sensor, will provide it with increased performance, and the camera will be noticeably more responsive.
There is also information that Samsung engineers are working on an image sensor with a resolution of 500 megapixels for their smartphone cameras. However, this is very similar to Samsung, which continues the megapixel race, knowing full well that the more megapixels there are, the noisier the images will be in their original form.
