Back in early September, it was reported that Google would tighten the policy of introducing the Ultra HDR format against smartphone manufacturers, which they are not implementing very quickly, and now it has become known that this year Xiaomi’s top smartphones will begin to receive Ultra HDR support.
Ultra HDR helps maintain the vibrant colors and rich contrast that modern high-end smartphones can capture, ensuring compatibility with older devices without HDR displays. This will make photos look vibrant on flagship devices and will look great on legacy phones.
This year, Xiaomi specialists got into new trends and went all-in on this format, recently receiving the title of the second largest smartphone manufacturer in the world according to Counterpoint Research, and included Ultra HDR in many flagship devices.
These include Xiaomi 14 series devices, Xiaomi Mix Flip and Xiami Mix Fold 4 folding devices, as well as models of the Xiaomi 14T series announced yesterday.
These devices allow their owners to capture highly detailed images with rich contrast, which can be shared and viewed in all their glory on other HDR-enabled devices, including the flagships Google Pixel, Samsung Galaxy and OnePlus. Curiously, the regular Xiaomi 14 still does not support Ultra HDR, like last year’s Xiaomi 13T Pro. There is no confirmation for Xiaomi Mix Fold 4, but it should get this feature.
The fact that Xiaomi has finally decided to enable Ultra HDR support is a step in the right direction for the smartphone industry. As one of the largest smartphone brands in the world, Xiaomi will undoubtedly encourage other manufacturers and developers to adopt this format more widely.
The next logical step would be to extend Ultra HDR from Xiaomi’s flagship models to mid-range and budget-level devices and make it possible for everyone to share high-quality photos.
