Several Chinese online sources shared interesting information today. According to them, a month before the official release of HyperOS 2.0, Xiaomi will stop accepting new requests to unlock the bootloader.
The last date when owners of Xiaomi, Redmi and Poco devices will be able to unlock the bootloader is on September 9, 2024 at 23:59. It seems that this will permanently and irrevocably close any flexibility regarding device configuration or obtaining root rights.
Even with the release of HuperOS 1.0, Xiaomi developers have slightly complicated the process of unlocking the bootloader on Xiaomi, Redmi and Poco smartphones and tablets (details), especially for users from China, and now this feature is likely to disappear altogether.
However, at the moment there is no exact information whether these changes will affect the global versions of Xiaomi, Redmi and Poco devices, however, based on the general trend, this may affect them as well.
It’s worth noting here that Xiaomi is not the only one making this move. The largest smartphone manufacturers are gradually tightening security measures by disabling bootloader unlocking. This is largely due to the desire to maintain better control over their device ecosystems for security and to reduce unauthorized modifications.
However, so far Xiaomi has not provided any official information about how the bootloader will be unlocked on Xiaomi in 2025 and later.
