A recent message from Xiaomi‘s product manager, known as Bao_Xiao Li on the Weibo social network, says that work on integrating the full-focal length Dolby Vision technology capabilities into the flagship Xiaomi 14 Ultra camera phone (review) has been completed and is currently in the Dolby certification process.

This long-awaited feature will bring Dolby Vision support to all three of the smartphone’s main lenses to further cement the Xiaomi 14 Ultra’s status as one of the most advanced photoflaggers on the market.

The Dolby Vision feature should become available to Xiaomi 14 Ultra users in mid to late May, subject to successful Dolby certification.

Dolby Vision for all Xiaomi 14 Ultra Camera Modules

That is, the latest camera update for Xiaomi 14 Ultra will add Dolby Vision support for all major modules. These include:

  • 0.5x Ultra Wide Angle Lens
  • Telephoto lens with 3.2
  • 5x Ultra-telephoto Lens

Such a wide-ranging implementation ensures that Xiaomi 14 Ultra owners will be able to record exceptional HDR video regardless of the lens used.

What is Dolby Vision?

Dolby Vision technology is an alternative to the well-known HDR10+, which offers us brighter colors and high brightness levels, but Dolby Vision surpasses HDR10+ by offering the user a color depth of 12 bits (versus 10 bits in HDR10+) and brightness of up to 10,000 nits compared to 4,000 nits in HDR10+.

One of the main advantages of Dolby Vision over HDR10+ is the addition of dynamic metadata to the underlying HDR image data. They contain instructions for each frame that the display uses to recreate the content as accurately as possible.

Thus, Dolby Vision technology allows you to better display colors, making them more realistic. Additionally, due to the wider color depth, the projected colors are much wider than those of the HDR10+.
